History
of the Long
Island Liberty
Women’s Ice
Hockey Club
The Long Island
Liberty team was
organized in
1998 after some
players from
another women's
program wanted
to branch off
and begin
another team.
The team had its
home ice at
Sports Plus in
Lake Grove,
New York during
its first 4
seasons. Over
the past two
seasons the team
had its "home"
ice at the
Hommocks Rink in
Mamaroneck, New
York and
the Ice Hutch in
Mount Vernon,
New York, both
in lower
Westchester.
Many of our
opponent teams
are from the
Hudson Valley
and Westchester
areas. These ice
rinks locations
have helped us
to maintain
competitive
play. For our
up coming 7th
season, however,
the team will
have ice on
Long Island at
the Dix Hills
arena for some
home ice game
slots and
practice. The
average age of
the team is 28
years old with
girls ranging in
age from 21 to
49 years old.
We have players
who were born in
places like
Wisconsin,
Virginia, New
Hampshire and
England playing
on the team
and who have
made their homes
here on Long
Island from
Huntington to
Riverhead. The
camaraderie and
chemistry of the
team continues
to get
stronger and
stronger with
each passing
season. We
average about 24
games a season.
Over the 6 past
seasons, the
Liberty has
gained strength
and talent.
We play all over
the tri-state
area as well as
Massachusetts,
Pennsylvania
and Canada. We
have been able
to recruit some
Division III
players who
have extensive
training and
well-defined
skills. These
wonderfully
talented players
have enhanced
the already
experienced and
talented
members of the
main core of the
team that has
been together
since the
team's
inception.
During the
2001-2002 and
2003-2004
seasons, the
Liberty
took home
championship
trophies from
Montreal, Canada
while playing
for the
"Montreal Cup"
through a
tournament
organized by
Canadian
Hockey
Enterprises,
Ltd. of
Peterborough,
Ontario,
Canada. Many
of our
players have
participated in
the Women's Open
Division of the
Empire
State Games in
Lake Placid, New
York and make up
the bulk of the
roster
in ice hockey
for the Long
Island region.
